This tree has a striking appearance. It is a conifer, and the needles are leaf plates aligned along the stem of each branch. It will eventually get large (maybe not in your lifetime) so choose appropriate location. From Chile, well adapted to our region. It will eventually produce delicious nuts, like giant pine nuts -(in 25 - 30 years).

Foliage: The leaves are simple, spiney pointed, scale like, completely covering the stem. The leaves may persist 10 - 15 years

Flowers: Male and female cones are both decorative. Trees tend to be dioecious .- separate male and female trees, some trees are monoecious, or chose to become so eventually.

Features: Very unique looking tree, good for contrast in any planting. Good specimen tree, not for small gardens.

Growing conditions: Sun. Prefers some moisture and well drained soil. Tolerant of many soil types, maritime exposure, and will naturalize and become drought tolerant.

Uses and comments: It has sharp leaf tips, so not for intimate contact locations. This is an ancient species. The nuts were a major food source for native peoples in Patagonia. It may take 30 years for nut production. Trees can live for 1000 years.
