Incense Cedar is a west coast native. It is tough, easy to grow. The tree embodies an elegant, stately form, a tall and narrow, orderly appearance, yet with a playful twist to the fan like sprays of the foliage tips. The dark green foliage is fragrant on hot days. West Coast native plant.

Calocedrus decurrens Family: Cupressaceae Common name: Incense Cedar

Size: Up to 60’ in cultivation, twice that in the wild in good soil

Shape: Narrow, pyramidal Growth rate: Fast at first to 20’, then slower Type: Conifer

Foliage: Densely massed, vivid green, lustrous foliage all year. Branchlets flattened, terminated in dense fan-like sprays. Aromatic when crushed.

Features: Handsome specimen tree, or good in large scale screen

Growing conditions: Sun or part shade. Prefers moist, well drained fertile soil. Will do well in poor dry soil with drainage

Climate zone: 5+

Uses and comments: Native to southern Oregon and California. Does not usually develop brown “winter burn” color like Thuja plicata. Grows fast to 20’ or so, then slows growth. Wood is exceptionally resistant to decay. This plant is resistant to deer (?)
