This is a small conifer, with a generally pyramidal shape. The blue/gray/green foliage is a wonderful color and texture contrast with other plants. Extremely hardy.

Type: Conifer Foliage: Gray green, scale like needles, which are soft and aromatic

Features: The foliage color and pattern is beautiful next to neighboring foliage. The cones are 3/4 to 1 inch in diameter, roundish, with 6-8 shield shaped woody plates. The outer bark flakes away revealing smooth cherry red inner bark.

Growing conditions: Full sun - at least 6 hours per day. Grows well in any well drained soil. Drought tolerant. Grows naturally on dry sterile rocky mountain slopes, but enjoys better, cultivated conditions.

Climate zone: 7 - 9

Uses and comments: This is the only native cypress in the southwest. Cupressus glabra has been separated into as many as 5 varieties. Classification seems like it is still in progress. There are several named selections withe exceptional foliage color.
