A beautiful evergreen oak, a West Coast native from Mendocino County south into Baja California. As the name implies it thrives in a coastal environment, (although not usually directly exposed to the sea) One of my favorite oaks!

Genus species: Quercus agrifolia Family: Fagaceae Commmon Name: Coast Live Oak

Size: 20 - 40’, more eventually. Or it can be a shrub in marginal conditions

Shape: Broadly rounded form, often wider than tall Growth rate: medium

Type: Broadleaf evergreen

Foliage: Leaves simple, alternate, elliptical to oblong, 1-1/2” long, variable, thick, leathery, margins turned under, with small spiny teeth.

Features: Beautiful year round glossy foliage. (It drops its old leaves in the spring)

Growing conditions: Full sun. Thrives in the coastal environment. Prefers good drainage. Some help with summer water the first couple years is desirable, then taper off to NO summer water. No fertilizer.

Climate Zone: Hardy to zone 8

Uses and comments: Mature Coast Live Oaks do not want summer water! , or disturbance in the root zone. Manzanita, Ceanothus, Coyote bush,Cistus, Coffeeberry, and Garrya are examples of good companion plants, which also do not want summer water
