This tree is in the Rose family.There are numerous species of Sorbus throughout the northern hemisphere, they hybridize freely. Often growing in disturbed locations, considered a pioneer species in the wild. The Rowan tree is a beautiful landscape plant, considering its leaves, flowers, and berries.

Foliage: Leaves are alternate and pinnately compound, with 9 - 15 leaflets. Slightly serrated leaf margins. Dull green above, lighter below

Seasonal fall color: Yellow and orange

Flowers: White 5 petaled flowers in flat topped clusters in May. Beautiful, but don’t smell very good.

Features: Grey bark smooth when young, rougher with age. Berry clusters covering the tree in fall are beautiful.

Growing conditions: Sun to part shade, prefers good drainage. Climate zone: Hardy to zone 3

Uses and comments: The flowers attract butterflies, berry like fruit is loved by birds. This tree is one of the few introduced trees which have naturalized in Alaska. Native from western Europe to western Asia.
